MEDIA STATEMENT
 15 SEPTEMBER 2000

A CALL UPON THE YOUTH TO REGISTER AS VOTERS ON 16/17 SEPTEMBER 2000

The Eastern Cape Youth Commission wishes to make a clarion call to all citizens of South Africa and the youth in particular to register as
voters on the 16/17 September 2000.

The new dispensation that we have ushered in our country gives an opportunity to its citizens to exercise their right to vote for their
representatives in an attempt to entrench and deepen democracy.

It is not only right, but an obligation for every citizen to ensure that we promote democracy throughout our lives. We need to be in the
forefront in defence of future development.

This coming weekend, all Youth Commissioners will be deployed together with other public representatives to encourage youth in their places
where they can be found to register.

We will also be communicating with the youth formations in an attempt to establish volunteer groups who will be going to communities and
preach the gospel of registration. We hope that many people will be able to come forward and offer their services to assist especially the
aged people.

Once more, the voter education programme should start as soon as possible so that people can put value to what they are voting for.We call
upon all communities including churches, schools, factories, sport bodies and tribal authorities to set the example of encouraging their
constituencies to register.
